Local Resident Kicks off Fundraising Effort for a new Ultrasound Machine

Riverside Health Care Facilities has approved the purchase of a new ultrasound machine for the Rainy River Health Centre. The new machine comes with a price tag of $135,000 so the Riverside Foundation is raising funds to support the purchase of it.

Local resident, Jack Elliott is kicking off the fundraising efforts with a commitment to match all donations received for the new ultrasound machine up to $10,000 in honour of his late wife Norma. Norma made a significant contribution to health care in Rainy River and the surrounding communities through her long relationship with area health care services as a nurse. She worked as the Director of Services at the former Red Cross Hospitals in both Rainy River and Emo, continued through the amalgamation of both with Riverside, and was instrumental in the development of the new Rainy River Health Centre, amongst many other accomplishments.

According to Dr. Ennett, physician at the Rainy River Health Centre, the current machine being used for exams is a sonar point of care machine that is designed for bedside physician use and is not of the same calibre as the machine housed at LVGH. Unfortunately, this requires patients from the west end of the district to travel to Fort Frances for certain examinations beyond the capacity of the current machine.

The new machine will not only allow obstetrical patients to be seen in Rainy River, but because of the higher quality images that it will produce, it will eliminate the need for patients to travel for a follow-up exam.

Donations made by cheque to Riverside Foundation for Health Care or cash for the new ultrasound machine can be dropped off to the Rainy River Health Centre or to the Foundation Office (cards also accepted at this location) located in the main lobby of LVGH. Donations can also be mailed to Riverside Foundation at 110 Victoria Ave, Fort Frances, ON, P9A 2B7; called in to the Foundation Office at 807-274-4803 or made online at www.riversidefoundation.ca/rainyriver. When donating online, please include “Rainy River ultrasound” in the details section of the web form.

*all cheques to be made out to Riverside Foundation for Health Care, please include “Rainy River ultrasound” in the memo line of the cheque.
